Chris Montgomery’s main research interests lie in the Rield of perceptual dialectology, more speciRically, methodological approaches to the study of non-linguists' perception. He has extensively worked on the role of (real and imagined) borders in perception. He is also interested in folk linguistics and language attitudes in general, that is, how (linguistically) lay people respond to language, and the reasons behind these responses. In his research, he has combined different techniques used in the Rield of geography with those employed in the study of language variation and perception, particularly focussing on the possibilities provided by GIS technology.
