Regionalsprache.de (REDE) is a research project initiated at the Research Center Deutscher Sprachatlas in 2008. It has two goals: to investigate the variation-linguistic structure and dynamics of the modern regional languages of German, and to develop an online, research-oriented geographic information system known as the REDE SprachGIS. The REDE SprachGIS not only provides users access to an extensive collection of digitized linguistic materials, but also allows users to create their own maps using either their own data or existing material.

The goal of this workshop is to provide an understanding and working knowledge of the REDE SprachGIS. It will consist of six sessions in total. Participants will learn how to navigate through the platform and search for linguistic maps, Wenker questionnaires, speech recordings, and bibliographic information. Participants will also learn to import their own data into the SprachGIS and create various types of maps (e.g., point-symbol maps, choropleth maps).
