In this presentation, and following on the heels of Jannis Androutsopoulos’ opening lecture, I consider how digital discourse is deployed a resources for adults to construct young people as different and to perform their own status as “grown-ups”. I will do this in two parts by drawing on some of my older work and some of my newer work. In Part 1, I focus on language ideologies and the metalinguistic framing of young people’s digital discourse; this is organized around the analytic framework of iconicity, erasure, and recursivity. In Part 2, I focus on the way these same language ideological processes are expressed visually; here, I orient to the social semiotic analysis of narrativity, salience, and social distance. Across both parts of the presentation I want to show how young people – particularly young women – come off poorly in the widespread (mis)representation of their digital media practices. Once again, therefore, young people are treated as a site for policing not only language and communication, but also the social order: for preserving the status quo and, supposedly, for preventing moral decline.
