MA Jay King

Jay King is an MA graduate in Sociolinguistics from the University of Bern. Their research focuses on the social meaning of language variation, particularly at the intersections of gender, sexuality, and (national) belonging. They are particularly interested in how hegemonic power structures shape, and are shaped by, everyday language use, and in research that connects sociolinguistic theories with questions of social justice and inclusion.

Their MA thesis explored how queer Polish Catholics discursively reconcile religious and gender/sexual identities, and they have conducted independent research on pronoun variability and sharing practices among non-binary individuals in Switzerland. They work with mixed-methods approaches, combining qualitative and quantitative perspectives to explore these questions from multiple angles.
